THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING THE TIME TO LISTEN
I wanted to share a story with you that will always be close to my heart. I am really happy I had my camera with me. These portraits are some of my favorites because they mean so much to me.
There I was…on a quick roadtrip from Dallas to a little town called Temple, TX. I was freezing cold in the sleet and needed a hot cup of coffee before exploring the town and scouting locations for the shoot. I’ve never been one to be in a big rush. I do my best to take it slow and take the time to see what is around me. I love studying people. My brain is fantastical when it comes to mental imagery…it even keeps me up at night. I hate the thought of forgetting something so I journal, I blog, I make to do lists like a maniac and I take photographs. I also go through life taking mental snapshots but sometimes you have to stop and take a photo that you can hold in your hand and share with people. I was walking into Jack in the Box to grab coffee and there was a guy standing by the front door. All I could think was wow he has got to be freezing and that he had kind eyes. The sleet was literally hurting my face and who knows how long he had been outside. Before he could say anything I asked him his name and if he wanted to have some coffee with me. This is Russell. We hung out for a little while and I found out he had been sleeping outside for the week while visiting his daughter. He is a plumber but he told me his passion is drawing. I asked him if I could take his picture and if he needed anything. He said he was trying to get a bus ticket to Austin before it started snowing. He was such a kind soul. I could just tell by the way he talked about his daughter how much he loved that girl. There are so many stories waiting to be told…take some time to stop and listen. Just hang out. Give a tight hug. I needed one and I know he did too.
